Taiwan Tech shines once again in the international academic field! According to the latest “World’s Top 2% Scientists” list released by Stanford University, Taiwan Tech has 54 professors recognized in the “Lifetime Scientific Impact Ranking (1960-2023)” and 44 in the “2023 Annual Scientific Impact Ranking”. Excluding the 28 professors featured in both lists, Taiwan Tech has a total of 70 professors recognized, ranking first among technical and vocational colleges and fifth overall in Taiwan, demonstrating exceptional scientific research strength and international influence.
In specific subfields whether in the annual or lifetime influence rankings, Taiwan Tech professors ranked first nationally in chemical engineering, construction, and AI image processing, excelling notably. Taiwan Tech has the largest number of people on the list comes from engineering and information communication, with about 41 professors included, followed by chemistry, energy and strategic technology, physics and astronomy, social sciences, and other fields.
Honorary Professor Tai-Shung Chung, a Yushan Scholar from the Graduate Institute of Applied Science and Technology is renowned for his work in thin-film materials, water purification, and clean energy. He ranks first in Taiwan in the “2023 Annual Scientific Impact Ranking” for chemical engineering and achieved an outstanding sixth place globally in the “Lifetime Impact Ranking”. Professor Chung has also been recognized as one of the top 0.1% of scholars in the water purification field by Expertscape, an American medical information organization.
Chair Professor Jui-Sheng Chou from the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering has outstanding performance in the field of construction engineering, ranking first in Taiwan and 50th globally in the annual rankings. He has dedicated many years to promoting civil engineering expertise and talent development in Taiwan. Additionally, he serves as the president of the Taiwan Construction Association Management and has completed numerous industry-academic collaboration projects, including developing forecasting systems for civil and hydraulic engineering, smart grid energy consumption predictions for building facilities, and practical disaster prevention and mitigation planning.
In the field of electronic and electrical engineering, Professor Rong-Zong Wai from the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering ranks first in Taiwan and 23rd in the global “Lifetime Scientific Influence Ranking”. He focuses on power electronics, mechatronics, and energy technology and was awarded the “Taiwan Electronics and Electrical Engineering Leadership Award”. In recent years, he has assisted the Hsinchu Science Park and several prominent companies in promoting net-zero sustainability and low-carbon smart initiatives, making him a key scholar in Taiwan's electrical engineering sector. Additionally, Professor Shyi-Ming Chen from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering ranks first in Taiwan in artificial intelligence and image processing, achieving an impressive 46th place globally in the lifetime impact rankings.
Additionally, the lifetime national lecturer Professor Bing-Joe Huang, the distinguished Professor Ren-Jieh Kuo won the Industrial Engineering Medal of the Chinese Institute of Industrial Engineers, Professor Yu-Chung Tsao, one of the ten outstanding youth of the Republic of China, Professor Ching-Hwa Ho, a fellow of the Optical Society of America for 2024, distinguished Professor Hsi-Peng Lu, a winner of the National Rock Solid Care Medal, and distinguished Professors Pin Luarn and Huei-Tse Hou, along with Chair Professor Chang-Yu Ou, a recipient of the Outstanding Engineering Professor Award from the Chinese Society of Engineers, and Professor Rong-Fung Huang, an industry-academia master, have all been selected for the “Lifetime Scientific Influence Ranking”, showcasing the rich research and development capacity of Taiwan Tech faculty and the international recognition of their achievements.
Notably, three professors from Taiwan Tech entered the “Lifetime Scientific Influence Ranking” for the first time on this list. They are Dr Donati Silvano, a visiting researcher at the Heterogeneously-Integrated Silicon Photonic Integration Center; Professor Vincent F. Yu from the Department of Industrial Management; and Professor Chang-Hua Lin from the Department of Electrical Engineering, all demonstrating exceptional research capabilities. Dr. Silvano Donati specializes in optoelectronic instruments, interferometry, and optical amplifier technology, with significant contributions to the optoelectronics field for a long time. Professor Vincent F. Yu has excelled in operations research, logistics, and supply chain management, and has been recognized as an outstanding researcher by the International Institute of Industrial Engineering and Operations Management. Professor Chang-Hua Lin focuses on research in light source drives, energy conversion, and energy storage systems.
With the continuous growth and addition of outstanding scholars, Taiwan Tech will continue to promote innovative research and development, deepen academic exchanges and cooperation, and continue to break boundaries in various fields, injecting new impetus into promoting scientific and technological progress and sustainable development.
