Taiwan Tech and Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association establish cooperation platform

On April 9th, the Heterogeneously-Integrated Silicon Photonic Integration Center (HiSiPIC) of Taiwan Tech and the Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA) established the International Heterogeneously Integrated Silicon Photonics Alliance (HiSPA) at the International Building of Taiwan Tech. This alliance aims to integrate the research and service capabilities of Taiwan Tech's Heterogeneously-Integrated Silicon Photonic Integration Center and interdisciplinary laboratory teams from various universities, along with PIDA's extensive experience in talent cultivation, industry-academia research exchange, and interdisciplinary cooperation in the optoelectronics industry. The goal is to create a service window for the Silicon Photonics Heterogeneous-integrated Industry-Academia Collaboration Platform.

Chairman of HiSPA, Professor San-Liang Lee, due to the application of AI, the importance of silicon photonics technology is well known, but its application is still in its infancy to accelerate the potential applications of this technology in various industrial fields. Effective integration of resources from academia, government, and industry is imperative to jointly promote its technology development and application promotion. The primary objective of the alliance is to integrate academic resources and facilitate technology exchange and industry-academia collaboration. The Heterogeneously-Integrated Silicon Photonic Integration Center at Taiwan Tech received funds from the second phase of the Ministry of Education's Specialized Center Program for Deepening Development, which has integrated resources and teams from various institutions across Taiwan. Within this alliance, it will serve as a hub for technical expertise and talent development, ensuring optimal utilization of resources to enhance research capabilities and standards. Additionally, it will actively support industrial technological research and development and cultivate the necessary talent pool.

Mr. Lee Yu-Chieh, Chairman of PIDA, highlighted the organization's three-decade commitment to promoting optics and photonics and its pivotal role as a bridge between industry, academia, and research institutions, gathering consensus from all walks of life, and leading industry chain cooperation. In the future, he emphasized PIDA's dedication to accelerating the development of silicon photonics and heterogeneous integration industries, particularly in the era of generative AI, which generates vast amounts of data requiring high-speed transmission and bandwidth. He sees this as an opportunity that will drive further development in Taiwan's optical communication technology and applications.

During the event, representatives from industry, academia and research institutes such as PIDA, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) - Optoelectronics and Systems Laboratories, Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI), Foxconn Semiconductor Research Institute, Global Wafer Co., Ltd., Chroma ATE Inc., Winbond Semiconductor Corp., and Suruga Seiki Co., Ltd., were invited to share their insights on the prospects and key process solutions related to silicon photonics heterogeneous integration.

With the establishment of the International Heterogeneously Integrated Silicon Photonics Alliance (HiSPA), in collaboration with PIDA, the aim is to connect upstream, midstream, and downstream member companies to establish a technology chain, expand cross-disciplinary cooperation, realize the research and development of new products, and extend the alliance's service capabilities to enhance the value of industry-critical technologies and applications.
