Tomas Zamostny, Czech Republic, Dual Degree from Taiwan Tech and Czech Technical University

pTomas Zamostny graduated in 2024 with a dual master’s degree from the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering at Taiwan Tech and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Czech Technical University in Prague, specializing in deep learning and telecommunications.

Driven by a passion for technology and problem-solving, Tomas embraced the challenge of studying in two distinct academic environments, gaining valuable international experience along the way. After graduation, he joined Vodafone Czech Republic in Prague as a Product Owner.

Choosing the Dual Degree path
I earned my dual master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Taiwan Tech and the Czech Technical University (CTU) in Prague,  focusing on deep learning and telecommunications. Pursuing this path wasn’t just about advancing my studies—it was about gaining a global perspective and immersing myself in different academic cultures.

Taiwan Tech stood out for its academic reputation in the field of electrical engineering, strong industry ties, and its vibrant student community. At CTU, the dual degree program was considered the most prestigious, offering an excellent opportunity to prepare for an international career. The program was intense and challenging, but the experience was very rewarding.

Taiwan Tech emphasizes research and innovation, while the CTU approach is more focused on practical applications. Learning to navigate both systems made me more adaptable and broadened my perspective. But the biggest advantage indeed was access to resources, networks, and expertise from two leading universities. This exposure prepared me for the fast-paced, evolving world of technology and telecommunications.

Living in Taiwan was a big adventure
Some of my most memorable experiences in Taiwan were unrelated to academics. I particularly enjoyed cycling around the NTUST and NTU campuses using the U-bike system—undoubtedly one of the healthiest habits I developed during my time in Taipei. The school cafeterias offered a completely new culinary experience compared to what I was accustomed to in the Czech Republic, and I quickly developed a strong fondness for bubble tea, often consuming up to three cups a day—no regrets.

Exploring Taipei by motorbike became another highlight of daily life. Although the traffic initially appeared chaotic, I gradually adapted and came to enjoy the experience.

Everyday tasks—such as grocery shopping and ordering food in Mandarin—posed small challenges and led to occasional amusing misunderstandings, but they also felt like mini-adventures.

I embraced these new situations, enrolled in Mandarin language classes, and found the Taiwanese people to be incredibly kind and patient. Their warmth greatly eased the adjustment process and helped me develop valuable skills in cross-cultural communication.

Building a career in the tech industry
Even before graduating, I had already spent three years working at a European–US company, which gave me a strong foundation for my future career.

After finishing my studies at CTU, I joined Vodafone Czech Republic in Prague as a Product Owner. In this role, I’m responsible for shaping the strategy and development of digital products that improve both the customer experience and business performance.

It’s a challenging but exciting position that combines problem-solving, planning, and working with different teams. Right now is a particularly interesting time to be at Vodafone, as the company is shifting from being a traditional telecom provider to becoming a tech-focused company—and I’m glad to contribute to that transformation. One project I am particularly proud of is Auto-Renewal, which helps simplify how customers manage their subscriptions and has led to better customer satisfaction and retention.

Lessons from my experiences
Looking back, my time at Taiwan Tech equipped me with technical expertise, leadership skills, and a global mindset—qualities that truly set me apart in the job market.

If I were to offer any advice to students planning their next steps or considering a master’s degree, I’ll admit—I still feel a bit too young to be giving advice! But if I had to share one insight, it would be this: joining this program was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It wasn’t easy, and that’s exactly what made it so worthwhile.

Say yes to challenges! Engage with your professors, take on projects, and make the most of the opportunities and resources at both universities. The experience opened doors, created unforgettable memories, and helped me grow into a more capable and confident person. Don’t take the easy route—the real growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone.
