In Tribute to Jane Goodall (1934–2025)

Taiwan Tech is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Jane Goodall, the world-renowned primatologist, conservationist, and environmentalist. Over the years, Dr. Goodall built a special bond with our university through her four visits to our campus between 2001 and 2014, inspiring generations of students and faculty alike.

In 2008, Taiwan Tech proudly awarded her an honorary doctorate in recognition of her outstanding contributions to science and humanity. During her visits, she planted liquidambar trees on campus as living symbols of environmental protection and hope. In 2011, the public art installation Love on Earth by Taiwanese artist Hsu Li-Hsien was unveiled in her honor, featuring a stone relief of Dr. Goodall alongside carvings of chimpanzees and endangered species.

During her most recent visit in 2016, Dr. Goodall delivered a powerful message: “Every decision, big or small, made by each person every day can impact the world.” These words have since been woven into Taiwan Tech’s Social Practice program, which engages all undergraduates in projects that contribute to society.

Her legacy also lives on through the Roots & Shoots student club at Taiwan Tech, inspired by the Jane Goodall Institute’s global youth program. The club continues her mission by promoting conservation, advancing sustainability initiatives, and caring for the campus cats.

Dr. Jane Goodall’s lifelong dedication to the planet remains a guiding light for Taiwan Tech. We honor her memory with gratitude and will continue to carry forward her vision of hope and responsibility for a better world.
