The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Taiwan Tech celebrates its 50th anniversary and has specially organized the “50th Anniversary Celebration Symposium”. Centered on the theme “Heritage, Innovation, and Vision”, the event brought together distinguished guests, alumni, faculty, and students to reflect on five decades of solid foundations and to jointly look ahead to a new future in smart manufacturing, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and engineering education.

The symposium opened with remarks by President Jia-Yush Yen. President Yen stated that mechanical engineering is one of the core disciplines of Taiwan Tech. Over the past fifty years, the department has cultivated numerous industry leaders who have played key roles in major national projects, the semiconductor sector, smart manufacturing, and biomedical engineering. Looking ahead, the university will continue advancing interdisciplinary integration and the incorporation of AI, demonstrating strategic planning in industry collaboration and forward-looking research while strengthening the international competitiveness of engineering education.

The symposium was inaugurated with remarks by President Jia-Yush Yen.
Secretary-General Yu-Lin Kuo noted that, in the cultivation of high-level talent, the achievements of the Master’s Program in Semiconductor Advanced Management and R&D, as well as the Smart Electric Vehicle Research Center, have become major highlights. He also described the accomplishments of faculty and students in international education and technological exchange, showcasing the global influence of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Taiwan Tech

Department Chair Ching-Chi Hsu reviewed the department’s development trajectory, from its early focus on fundamental mechanical design and manufacturing to its current coverage of cutting-edge fields such as smart electric vehicles, semiconductor equipment, biomedical engineering, AI, and digital twins. The department has consistently transformed and upgraded alongside industrial evolution, demonstrating strong resilience and forward-looking vision in response to industry demand for advanced engineering and system integration talent.

The symposium invited several distinguished alumni and industry leaders to share their professional experiences and life journeys. Po-Hsi Ko, Honorary Chairman of the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry, delivered a speech titled “Technology Always Originates from Machinery”, emphasizing the foundational role of mechanical engineering in all high-tech industries and encouraging younger generations to continuously refine their core technical skills. Kenny Hsiao, CEO of T-Global Co., Ltd., used his own career as an example to encourage students to maintain lifelong learning and an optimistic attitude, live thoughtfully, and pursue shared dreams.
Wei-Chih Liao, Taiwan Auto Design Co., Ltd., pointed out that future engineers must combine creativity, AI resources, and specialized technical expertise to become well-rounded professionals with systems thinking capabilities. Chih-Ching Hsu, Chairman of 3D Family Inc., recently donated professional software resources to assist the university in deepening AI and engineering integration in teaching, putting into practice the concept of “integrating enterprise resources to cultivate AI talent”, which received high praise from attendees. Hsien-Chung Peng, Legal Counsel at Jiin Yeeh Ding Enterprise Corp., shared his interdisciplinary journey “from technical competitor to Doctor of Law”, demonstrating the versatility of a mechanical engineering background across diverse professional fields. Wen-Hsien Hsu, Section Chief of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at National Taiwan University Hospital, spoke on the topic “The Mechanic in a White Coat”, illustrating the critical role of mechanical engineering in medical innovation. Finally, Chien-Lo Huang, Chairman of Skytech Inc., shared insights on the global deployment of advanced semiconductor wafer manufacturing equipment, highlighting the closely intertwined future of Taiwan’s mechanical and semiconductor industries.
This symposium not only honored fifty years of excellence in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, but also served as a grand technological gathering that united generations, connected industries, and charted the future. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Taiwan Tech will continue upholding its mission of “inheriting professional expertise, innovating technology, and envisioning the future,” cultivating more engineering leaders for Taiwan and the world.
