Boost for University-Industry Relations: New "AAEON Taiwan Tech R&D Center" Established

Taiwan Tech's strong connections with industry received another boost this month with the establishment of the "AAEON Taiwan Tech R&D Center". The AAEON Group, one of the leading designers and manufacturers of advanced industrial and embedded computing platforms, chose Taiwan Tech to set up a center on the research and development of Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things.

As AAEON chairman Chuang Yung-shu explained, the company will invest NT$30 million (approx. 952 000 US$) over the next three years with the aim to draw on Taiwan Tech's research strengths, particularly in the field of software development. He pointed out that with the rapid development of AI, it was no longer enough to just provide hardware. Software customization services have become a key business for AAEON. Customers would demand systematically integrated solutions to quickly respond to market demands. Thus, the training of software talent has become one of the main challenges for the company.

For researchers and students at Taiwan Tech, this will mean new chances and perspectives. The cooperation with AAEON will offer an excellent opportunity to understand the needs of the industry, and to join the product development cycle at an early stage. Taiwan Tech President Ching-jong  Liao thanked AAEON for its continuous report – as Y.S. Chuang and his wife had already made substantial donations to Taiwan Tech in previous years – and emphasized the mutual benefits of this new industry-university cooperation with one of Taiwan's global companies.

For Taiwan Tech which is branding itself as international applied research university, the new "AAEON Taiwan Tech R&D Centre" is another valuable addition to its list of more than twenty industry-funded research centers.
